Effective remedies for painful periods

Every woman reportedly experiences severe pain associated with menstruation at least once in her life. In some cases, the pain is so severe that it prevents a woman's ability to carry out daily activities. Fortunately, there are effective ways to painful periodsthat can bring relief on these days.

Painful menstrual periods - causes

Painful periods most often occur in teenagers and young women who already have regular cycles. Menstrual pains can occur as soon as bleeding starts or even a few days before. They are usually located in the lower abdomen, but can also radiate to the groin and sacral region of the spine. They are most intense in women between the ages of 20 and 25. Uterine contractions cause pain and, in addition, external factors can intensify it. Studies show that drinking coffee, strong tea or smoking cigarettes intensifies the pain. These symptoms can be accompanied by diarrhoea, headaches, nausea, fatigue, worsening of mood and palpitations. 

Painful periods - how to cope?

The simplest solution is painkillers to relieve the pain. It is worth remembering to take the tablet moments before the pain develops, that is, at the very first moment when you feel discomfort. This way, the medication will take effect more quickly and better.

However, there are also alternative methods to help alleviate the symptoms somewhat. Here are some tried and tested ways! 

  • Warm compresses are helpful when menstruation is not too heavy. Warm compresses relieves abdominal pain and cramps. For this purpose, a thermoformer or a hot water bottle can be used. 
  • Relaxation and rest - stress hormones can contribute to increased pain during this time, so it is a good idea to lie down, meditate for a while and relax completely. 
  • Herbal infusions - a good option is to drink herbal infusions that have a relaxing effect. St. John's wort works well.
  • A lightly digestible diet, helps to reduce bloating, which often occurs during menstruation, and does not strain the stomach. It is worth adding calcium to your meals, which helps to relieve uterine contractions. 
  • Moderate physical activity - many women avoid sports and all exercise during this time. However, it is good to know that light activity combined with stretching relieves pain, stimulates circulation and oxygenates the body. Try yoga, pool or stretching!

It is worth combining these methods to intensify their beneficial effects. The earlier we introduce these healthy habits (e.g. by exercising yoga regularly, limiting the intake of strong coffee and tea), the sooner the pain should start to subside.

Severe pain during menstruation - what can be done?

For severe menstrual pain, it is worth considering starting hormone therapy by taking birth control pills. Studies show that they eliminate severe pain in up to 90% cases. It is also worth knowing that if the above-mentioned methods do not help, a painful periods are recurring all the time, their cause may be a serious illness.
