A relaxation massage not only affects our health, but also improves our wellbeing. It can even be taken on a daily basis. It aims to calm and de-stress the patient.
What is a relaxation massage?
Relaxation massage is a variation of classical massage. Its main tasks are:
- reducing muscle tension,
- whole-body relaxation,
- eliminating back, neck and shoulder pain,
- improving circulation and lymph flow,
- fat reduction,
- emotional calming of the person being massaged.
Types of relaxation massage
One of the basic types of relaxation massage is the classic massage, which involves stroking, kneading, tapping, and patting the body or parts of the body.
Another type is massage with herbal stamps. We also distinguish between aromatherapy massages, Lomi Lomi massage, hot stone massage, Ma-uri, Shiatsu or chocolate massage and special massages for pregnant women, which, however, can only be carried out with a doctor's consent.
For herbal stamp massage, the masseur uses pouches filled with aromatic herbs, e.g. lemongrass, turmeric, camphor, green tea, cardamom or cloves. He or she places the heated stamps briefly on particular points on the body . When they have cooled down, the therapist presses them harder and longer on the body.
During a hot stone massage, on the other hand, the stones are placed on the back at special energy points, the so-called chakras. The masseur then moves them along the meridian, or channels for the flow of energy.
Lomi Lomi massage originated in Hawaii. It has both a relaxing and stress-relieving effect, as well as a slimming and even pain-relieving effect.
Shiatsu, on the other hand, is derived from traditional Japanese medicine, relieves pain, reduces muscle tension in the shoulders, neck and nape, and improves the functioning of the nervous, circulatory and endocrine systems.
MA-URI, on the other hand, is a healing massage. It comes from the ancient tradition of temple massage, performed by Hawaiian Kahuna shamans. It involves evoking energy, allowing the person being massaged to free themselves from harmful tensions, beliefs and illnesses. Hot chocolate massage, on the other hand, is a relaxing massage - it has a soothing effect on tense muscles and the nervous system.
Relaxation massages can be performed on the patient's whole body or only on certain parts of the body. They usually take between an hour and an hour and a half.

What does a relaxation massage look like?
Relaxation massage generally takes place in a suitably prepared and lit area, often with candles and relaxing music and the scent of aromatic oils.
The method of massage depends on the type of massage. What they have in common, however, is that they aim to relieve stress and tension in the body and mind. The client is usually in a lying position during the massage. Generally, he or she should be undressed and covered with a towel only in the intimate areas, but sometimes the massage can take place in loose, casual clothing.
Mostly, a relaxation massage begins and ends with stroking the massaged part of the body. This is followed by kneading, which helps to improve the blood supply to the massaged parts. The body is also patted. Later, the masseur rubs the areas on the body to reduce swelling and deposits.
During this type of massage, the masseur mostly uses smooth and soft movements. Massage is performed with the hands, fists, elbows, forearms, thumbs and sometimes with the feet and knees.
For whom is a relaxation massage advisable?
Relaxation massage is suitable for every person. It is safe and gentle, relaxing, calms the nerves, removes tension from the muscles and reduces stress.
People who complain of back and neck pain, are overtired, sleep poor, lack energy, stressed or hyperactive most often benefit from the benefits of relaxation massage.
